Henrik Dorf Nielsen, MSSc

I'm a native Dane and currently a resident of Finland. Living in North Karelia's capital, Joensuu, I am very close to the Finnish-Russian border which is convenient as I am pursuing a Doctoral degree in Human Geography - at the University of Eastern Finland - with a focus on borders and border related issues.
I have a variety of experience within academia and I am always looking for new ways to expand my horizon and network. This page has been created in an attempt to share my work with a larger audience and hopefully outside academia as well.

My PhD. dissertation is focused on perceptions of borders and boundaries and the land and people that lives on the other side of them. I use my own understanding of the concept of (Un)familiarity, which is based on Martin van der Velde and Bas Spierings model "The Bandwidth of (Un)familiarity. I have worked on internal and cultural boundaries in Finland but my doctoral dissertation is focused on the Finland-Russian and US-Mexican borders. In addition, I am also interested in the Danish-German borderlands, language borders, perception of borders, the other, strangers, geopolitics, geographical methods, sports and geopolitics etc. If you share any of the same interests, feel free to contact me via this site or on one the the social media platforms that I am on.
